Abstract

Summary: This article addresses evidential phrasemes of the Catalan language from a comparative-translational perspective. Evidentiality as a linguistic category refers to the sources of knowledge of a speaker’s claim. Through evidentiality a speaker expresses how and why s/he knows her/his claim is true. This semantic-pragmatic category, which includes evidential phrasemes, implicitly expresses a lot of evidential information. For the Catalan and German languages research into evidential phrasemes is still in its infancy. This article focuses on several phrasemes from each language and examines their evidential values. Further, it discusses the relations between evidentiality and intensification. [Keywords: evidentiality, phraseology, phraseme, idiomaticity, intensification, Catalan, German, translation]
