Abstract

Summary: This study deals with the participation of the poet Joan Vinyoli in the first announcement of the Ausiàs March de Gandia Prize created in 1959, in which he was a finalist for his book of poems For the Secret Staircase (Per l’escala secreta) while Pere Quart was the winner with Paid Holidays (Vacances pagades). The original and two typewritten manuscripts of the unpublished book, preserved in Vinyoli’s archive, are contrasted. Although the work remained unpublished, the poetic materials were later spread and re-used, mainly for the development of other books. Finally, the letters exchanged between members of the prize jury – Joan Fuster, Josep Maria Castellet and Salvador Espriu – are revised and taken into account.
