This article describes the presence of the Castilian and the Catalan languages in various areas
of Majorcan society. The selected areas include: education (school and university), local
administration, the media (radio, television and internet) and the economy (tourism and
trade). The data presented have been taken from surveys carried out in the year 2000 and the
overall view that is obtained clearly shows how Spanish is the predominant language in all
areas of society but especially in the economic domain, since it is in this sector where the
Spanish language has achieved major prestige.
