Abstract

The paper deals with the translation problem when subtitling the German director’s G.W. Pabst silent movies Joyless Street (1925) and Diary of a Lost Girl (1929). To achieve equivalence in translation, it will be necessary to take into account the communicative factors
in its context as in any other type of translation, as well as the variables of the register: the field, the modality and the tenor of the communicative dimension, presuppositions, implications, etc. of the pragmatic dimension and the restrictions specific to the film genre,
the discourse and the text of the semiotic dimension.
