Wirkungsweise repressiver Sprachpolitik dargestellt am Beispiel des Katalanischen in der Franco-Zeit

Abstract

The article attempts to show the mechanisms at work in repressive language policy. It first summarizes the measures of repression that the Francoist dictatorship used to restrict the use of Catalan. Then it tries to see what the consequences of these measures are from the point of view of the language and the point of view of the speaker, their linguistic awareness, and their practice. It also tries to find out why in the precise case of Catalan these measures were not very successful. The present contribution is intended to serve as a first approach to the issue.
