Abstract

First language acquisition is studied worldwide within Chomsky's redefined psycholinguistic and linguistic research programs. In this respect, phonology is also intensively researched as an essential module of grammar, which has revealed a reciprocal relationship between grammatical theory formation and language acquisition research. Theoretical constructs (such as those of the so-called strategies) and standardized methods of measuring phonological development enable the comparison of different types of acquisition, including bilingual and multilingual acquisition. These help to clarify general questions about the acquisition of phonology. At the same time, they make it possible to clarify long-standing problems in bi- and multilingualism research.
