Abstract

There are only a few opportunities to gain insight into Ramon Llull's literary working methods. The three versions of the Libre de consolació d'ermità offer a starting point. We know that Llull himself wrote in Catalan and Latin. A Catalan version from August 1313, an undated Latin version and a Latin version from November 1313 are available for the work mentioned. Llull first wrote the Catalan text, then began translating it into Latin, but soon only noted key words (perhaps so that he could dictate the text later, which hardly ever happened). He then reformulated the whole result in Latin, sometimes shortening it compared to the Catalan original, sometimes expanding it, sometimes making it more precise, and thus creating a small, independent work.
