Abstract

The success of Quim Monzó, born in 1952, who has already published various collections of short stories, is due to the author's ability to combine refined irony and comical effects with inexhaustible narrative ability and ideas. Monzó is in the literary tradition of the Anglo-American "short story” authors, of the Hispano-American "nueva novela" and also of French and Catalan Modernism, Symbolism and Surrealism. The protagonists of the stories gathered in Uf, va dir ell must act in extreme situations in a world of everyday appearance but full of absurd things. Monzó draws his characters from a sceptical perspective without denying them their human solidarity. The political, moral, and sexual revolts of the 1968 generation and the theories of the French avant-garde on the subversive literary text and a kind of postmodernist mentality are reflected in the texts analysed for this essay.
