Abstract

Miquel Àngel Riera is one of the most important Catalan novelists of the 1970s and 1980s. This article analyzes the development of narrative perspectives and techniques in the five novels written by the Mallorca (Manacor)-born and resident writer Riera: Andreu Milà (1973), Morir quan cal (1974), L'endemà de mai (1987), Panorma amb dona (1983) and Els déus inaccessibles (1987). Each and every one of these novels unfolds its narrative individuality. And yet a constant feature can be discerned that gains a leitmotiv character for Riera's oeuvre as it were: a sharp contrast between internal and external perspectives, i.e., a thematization of the contradiction between self-perception and the perception of others, which is ultimately a thematization of non-communication and loneliness.
