Abstract

Summary: Both the Catalan and German languages have a considerable amount of phraseological units at their disposal through which speakers conceptualise and characterise verbal communication. Among them we find a very specific group, which corresponds to formulation discourse markers (e.g. és a dir das heißt): words and phrases of diverse grammatical structures and compositions which behave in text in quite a similar way to discourse connectors. Formulation discourse markers link text units and establish semantic identity relations between them. They also they guide the receiver of the text made by helping them to extract from the context any necessary inferences about its propositional content. Through this parallel study of a set of these metacommunicative phrases I reveal a number of shared tendencies in their lexical formation, morphosyntactic fixedness, distribution and prosody.
