Abstract

The Jaussely Plan (1907) and the “Reforma”, later to be called Via Laietana (1908), are two important urban projects that significantly transformed the city of Barcelona at the beginning of the 20th century. In this contribution, we summarize and comment on what Joan Maragall said on these projects through his articles and poems. He reveals himself to be a strong supporter of these developments and of the expansion that the town experienced in those days, which is in clear contrast to the opinions expressed by some of his contemporaries, which were rather skeptical, if not totally opposed. Maragall, however, does not ignore the social conflicts that these urban developments are about to create and already anticipates some of the subjects that he will further develop later on, after the events of the Setmana Tràgica in 1909.
