Abstract

This paper sets out to describe the circumstances in which Joan Coromines carried out the work on his Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano. It reviews the different phases of research and work process, from the initial time-consuming labour of bringing to light a very extensive bibliography – a task begun in an unfavourable context in 1940 – to the composition of the last of the dictionary’s entries at the end of 1951. The paper also offers a comprehensive view of the way in which the Catalan philologist met this scholarly challenge and the results he achieved.
Keywords: Coromines / Corominas, lexicography, etymological dictionary, Menéndez Pidal, Spanish philology, dictionary on historical principles.
