Abstract

The transposition of a literary text into a musical text always necessitates some changes, owing to the peculiarities and requirements of that genre and to the creative and innovative spirit of the librettist and the composer. The aim of this article is to contrastively examine how the aspects of local color and cacique, which emerge very succinctly and significantly in Terra baixa, a rural realistic Catalan drama, are transformed or taken over with the support of music in Tiefland, a veristic opera of universal dimensions.
