In both the universal and the historical-individual language sense, spoken Catalan has a number of typical properties compared to written Catalan which are responsible for a relatively clear discrepancy between the oral and the scriptural discourse traditions. Universal phenomena include elliptical constructions and various techniques of particular expressiveness in oral discourse. Typically Catalan are, on the other hand, simplifications of the system of enclitic personal pronouns, the postposition of demonstratives or analogy phenomena in the area of gender and number. The essay uses numerous examples from several corpora to work out the most important divergences between the oral and the scriptural code in the Catalan as used in the city and the province of Barcelona.
