Abstract

Summary: Children’s literature has created a different reading circuit due to prescription, that is to say, due to the recommendations and censures that have historically determined the readings addressed to children. This article intends to take a close look at the stakeholders responsible for these actions and at the kind of actions carried out during key moments in the history of Catalan literature. Therefore, the legal system ruling creation, editing and diffusion of books for children between 1936 and 1977 will be examined. Next, the impact of the institutions will be carefully explored through the analysis of El més petit de tots (Anglada, 1937) and that of the significance of the Propaganda Commissariat of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1937–1938). Finally, the paper delves into the influence teachers and parents had by studying the documents stating which readings were appropriate in the first schools that taught in Catalan as well as the books edited during the early days of La Galera publisher (1962–1968).
