Abstract

Summary: This paper discusses the difficulty of inserting a work previously unrecognized in the global literary canon into a local literary canon, based on a case study, namely the early 20th century Catalan edition of Animais Nossos Amigos, originally written in Portuguese by Afonso Lopes Vieira. Several aspects of the Catalan version Bestioles Amigues are examined, including the profile of both the responsible translators (Ignasi Ribera i Rovira and Ferran Maristany) and the illustrators (Raúl Lino and Artur Ballester), as well as the socioliterary publishing context. The analysis is based on considering all of these factors as a process of accumulation and loss of symbolic capital on the part of the agents involved.
