Abstract

The lack of a Catalan glossary or a technical dictionary in the field of medical literature and furthermore in the research of medicines and clinical morpharmacology frequently leads to problems in the use of Catalan in these areas. The essay describes the process in which a list containing some of these words, mostly of English origin, was normalised and published in Catalan. Beginning with a list of 376 Catalan words and expressions that were difficult to translate, we observed that some already had a widely known translation due to their common use, others had recently been normalised and the rest were still awaiting their examination and normalisation. In a second phase 42 of these words and expressions, which are also explained in this article, were discussed and normalised. To spread the procedure and its results and to offer them to those professionals who are likely to use these words, two medical essays and a leaflet were published. During the five fundamental project phases biomedical research specialists
and linguists as well as various institutions collaborated without which it would have been difficult to establish the objective of the project. We believe that similar works can contribute to a better use of technical Catalan in professional health care.
