Abstract

The article examines the problem of attitudes towards language and language policy in a district of Barcelona during the initial phase of the official language normalization campaign (normalització lingüística 1980/81, follow-up examination 1986) using the methods of «qualitative» or «interpretative» sociolinguistics (Gumperz, Auer / di Luzio et al.), i.e. on the basis of open interviews and participatory observation and with the tools of discourse and conversation analysis. It turns out that the attitudes expressed always depend on social roles (and role definitions) and experiences, and that in this context apparent inconsistencies and contradictions in behavior can also be explained. After a detailed discussion of the theoretical requirements, this is exemplified through two case studies.
