Abstract

Summary: The present article contains the study of Jordi Casanovas’ three plays on Catalan identity. The analysis demonstrates how the playwright succeeds in reflecting the complex reality of Catalan identity from a varied perspective both chronologically as well as socially. To achieve this goal, Casanovas creates public, semi-public and private contexts to develop the action, offering an overview which reproduces a changing reality and its constant redefinition. In this way, the playwright transforms a specific and ‘local’ message into a global and transnational one and invites the audience to reflect on a topic which from particular changes to general. Keywords: Jordi Casanovas, Una història catalana, Pàtria, Vilafranca, contemporary Catalan drama, national identity, Catalan identity, identity and drama
